Kokrajhar Court Rejects Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani's Bail Plea, Announces 3-Day Police Custody

GUWAHATI: Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani was arrested by the Assam police based on a complaint from Assam's Kokrajhar for a tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Later on Thursday 21 April a day after his arrest, the MLA representing the Vadgam constituency was brought to Assam in the Kokrajhar Police Station.

According to the latest update, a court in Kokrajhar has now rejected the bail plea of the politician and he has been remanded to three days of police custody.

A team of Assam police picked up Mevani from the circuit house in Palanpur of Gujarat after a resident in Kokrajhar filed an FIR against him over offensive tweets.

Soon after the police reached Guwahati Airport with Mevani he was presented before the Kokrajhar court for the case hearing.

As informed by the lawyers of Mevani, a review petition will be submitted to the Guwahati High Court the next week on Monday 25 April.

Earlier on Thursday, Advocate Kankan Das who is also the General Secretary of APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) informed that for a tweet by Mevani an FIR was lodged against him and a bail petition was submitted.

On speaking with the media about the bail petition advocate Das added that 'we are hopeful that Mevani will be released today.'

Mevani who is the convener of the Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch has been booked under IPC Sections 120B, 153 (A), 295 (A), 504 and relevant sections of the IT (Information Technology) Act.

On Monday 18 April, the Gujarat MLA and former journalist posted a tweet where he wrote that Prime Minister Narendra Modi worship Godse of God and this led him into trouble.

The independent MLA has earlier assisted the Congress party which is now seen protesting against his arrest and extending legal support in the case.
