KOKRAJHAR: As per the direction of the Supreme Court of India, the Kokrajhar District Road Safety Committee was reconstituted with the District Magistrate/Deputy Commissioner, Kokrajhar as the chairman and the Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department (Roads and Buildings) as the Member Secretary on Saturday. Earlier, it was the district transport officer who was serving as Member Secretary in the District Road Safety Committee. However, the members of the District Road Safety Committee will remain as before.

A meeting in this regard was held on Saturday in the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner's office under the chairmanship of Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka.

The meeting discussed various issues related to road safety and how to minimize the road accidents and traffic congestion in Kokrajhar town. To reduce probable road accidents, the Deputy Commissioner instructed the District Transport Officer and Executive Engineer of PWD to inspect jointly the accident-prone areas of the district and asked them to make necessary arrangements by constructing speedbreakers/rumble strips, putting road signage in all PWD roads and displaying permissible speed limit at PWD roads and National Highways. The meeting also discussed about the traffic problems of Bow Bazar and near FCI warehouse as well as the complaints of stench emanating from it. In this regard, the Deputy Commissioner instructed the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Transport) to hold discussion with the Kokrajhar Municipal Board for further necessary action on the matter.
