Kokrajhar: In a significant step, the Kokrajhar Municipal Board (KMB) has started a drive against businessmen and traders occupying footpaths illegally in Kokrajhar town. The drive led by the chairman of the KMB, Bishnu Narzary, started on Sunday in Kokrajhar town.

Most of the businessmen and shop owners used to block almost all important and busy pavements. This aggravated the traffic problem as pedestrians had to walk on the road instead of the footpath. Nobody came forward to say something or complain against the businessmen who were blocking the pavements. Finally, action was taken by the KMB chairman Bishnu Narzary.

Talking to this reporter, Narzary said the clearance drive against the businessmen blocking pavements had started since Sunday and it would continue till the shop owners and traders obeyed the rule accordingly. He said that Kokrajhar was a fast-developing town and number of vehicles was increasing while the roads were becoming extremely congested due to which traffic problems had aggravated. He said the businessmen and traders blocking footpaths had added extra burden on the maintenance of traffic as pedestrians were compelled to walk on the road.

Narzary said the rule breakers would be imposed fine besides taking action as per law. He called upon all businessmen and traders to follow the orders. He also said that the clearance drive would be carried out in every footpath in Kokrajhar town.
