KOKRAJHAR: One of the accused persons in the sensational double rape and murder of two Rabha tribal girls at Abhaykhuti in Kokrajhar district, was injured when the police fired at him after he tried to flee by attacking the police with sharp weapon on Wednesday at around 9 pm in Bedlangmari area under Kokrajhar police station.
Talking to reporters, Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police Prateek Vijay Kumar Thube said that the prime accused in the rape and murder case, Farizul Rahman (22) of Salbari tried to escape with handcuffs during search operation near Bedlangmari, Salbari on Wednesday evening. He said that the police had been investigating the sensational murder case and three accused, including Rahman, have confessed their involvement in the rape and murder of the two girls at Abhaykhuti on June 11. He also said that during marathon interrogation on Wednesday evening, Rahman told police that he dumped a mobile handset belonging to the girls somewhere in Bedlangmari area and accordingly, the police team took him to the site in Bedlangmari in the evening where he had buried the mobile handset. He started digging with handcuffs and got a sharp weapon there with which he suddenly attack the police personnel holding the handcuff rope and tried to flee. The police personnel holding the handcuff was injured in the sudden attack with sharp weapon but other police personnel in a swift action fired two rounds, one of which hit the accused on his leg. Rahman was taken to RN Brahma Civil Hospital but later referred to Barpeta's Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital.
The SP told media persons that the post mortem report had also confirmed the rape and subsequent murder. He also said they had been examining all angles of the heinous crime.
Kokrajhar police arrested five persons the next day after the crime from the Abhaykhuti locality for preliminary investigation. Later, three accused- Faridul Rahman (22), Nazibul Seikh (20) and Majjamil Seikk (20) of Salbari area were arrested.
