GOLAGHAT: Women in large numbers, under the banner of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti staged a protest against microfinance companies near the Golaghat Deputy Commissioner's office on Friday.
Alleging that the microfinance companies had ruined the rural economy, the women protesters demanded that these microfinance companies be banned from operating in Assam. The protesters shouting various slogans, alleging that these companies were charging exorbitant rates of interest after giving loans to gullible villagers.
Taking part in the protest Chatra Mukti Sangram Samiti central committee general secretary Bidyut Saikia said that several families of village areas had been ruined after taking such loans. He further said that every week women who had taken loan from these companies were being harassed to extract the interest and principle amount. Several families had to sell off their land, house or other valuables to repay the loan. The protesters demanded that the microfinance companies should be banned forthwith and loan amount should be exempted.
