Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sonitpur organized workshop on potato varietal selection

Tezpur: A one-day workshop on potato participatory varietal selection programme under the Assam Agri-Business and Rural Transformation Project (APART) was organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sonitpur in collaboration with International Potato Centre (CIP) in the Napam campus on Wednesday.

The Head, KVK, Sonitpur, Dr Pramod Chandra Deka welcomed the farmers and dignitaries on the occasion. Addressing the workshop, Dr. Mrinal Saikia, Associate Director of Research (Agri), Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat elaborated about the different varieties of potato and importance of varietal selection for different purposes. Dr. Rupam Borgohain, Principal Scientist and Nodal officer, OPIU-APART, AAU, Jorhat, thoroughly discussed regarding APART project, its mechanism and the organizations involved in this World Bank funded project.

Nirmal Kant Sharma, Senior Research Associate from the International Potato Centre (CIP), also discussed about potato varietal selection and the methodology adopted for it. A short interactive session was also held between the farmers, APART staff and scientists of KVK, Sonitpur regarding different aspects of agriculture. After this, all the farmers visited the mother trial of potato at KVK, Sonitpur farm and also the baby trial conducted at farmers field in Jamuguri. Around 50 farmers and farm women from different parts of the district and all officials of KVK, Sonitpur attended the programme. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Roji Chutia, SMS (Agronomy), KVK, Sonitpur.
