LAKHIMPUR: The relentless protest programmes against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) initiated by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) continued on Monday too in Lakhimpur district.
The Lakhimpur district committee of the organization, expressing vehement resentment, burnt the dummy copy of the contentious Bill as soon as Home Minister Amit Shah moved it in the Lower House of Parliament (Lok Sabha). Further, the activists of the organization hanged the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, State Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarmah, State BJP president Ranjit Dass, Asom Gana Parishad president and State Agriculture Minister Atul Borah and State Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta in public places, flaying them for their unmoved attitude to pass the Bill in the Parliament.
The activists of the regional units of the organization under the Lakhimpur district committee carried out these movements across the district on Monday. Notably, the confrontation took place between AASU activities and security forces while the security personnel prevented the AASU activists from hanging the effigies of Atul Borah and Keshab Mahanta from the ceiling of Gana Bhavan, the Lakhimpur district AGP office located in North Lakhimpur town. Though the police personnel detained two AASU activists, they were later released.
Further, the activists of the organization administered flag-march in North Lakhimpur town in support of their demand and make the bandh called by NESO on Tuesday successful. The organization will hold Rakta Sankalpa against the controversial Bill in connection with Martyrs’ Day on December 10.
