LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district committee of the Asom Jatyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) initiated strong protest programme in Lakhimpur on Friday against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB).

Continuing its stand of opposition to the controversial Bill, the activists of the organization, led by district president Mondeep Neog and general secretary Jyoti Das, took out a protest rally in the presence of common people from North Lakhimpur Tyag-Kshetra covering the town. Later the protesters demonstrated in front of the Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner’s office for more than an hour. While staging the protest, the protesters slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Union government, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his State Government by shouting various slogans against them with regard to the controversial issue.

Later the organization submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister, through the Lakhimpur DC demanding the immediate scrapping of the Bill. The AJYCP cleared in the memorandum that the organization would not approve of the passing of the Bill in the Parliament, terming it as a tremendous threat to the existence of language, culture and demography of Assam and to the democracy of India. AJYCP central committee assistant general secretary Saurabh Das came down heavily against the BJP led governments regarding the issue.
