LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district Health Department is all set to launch the Tetanus Plus (TD) Vaccination Campaign from December 14 along with other parts of the State. It was declared by District Immunization Officer Dr. Gunin Kumar Gogoi and District Extension and Media Officer Madhab Chandra Phukan while addressing a media sensitization meeting organized by the Additional Chief Medical Health Officer (FW), Lakhimpur on Tetanus Plus (TD) Vaccination Campaign. The Tetanus Plus (TD) vaccine will be administered to boost the immune system of the body to prevent the infection and diphtheria.

Notably, tetanus is an acute infectious disease caused by toxigenic strains of the bacterium Clostridium tetani. The disease may occur at any age and case-fatality rates are high even where intensive care is available. On the other hand, diphtheria caused by Corynebacterium diphtheria, has been one of the most feared infectious diseases globally, which causes devastating epidemics. South East Asia is the primary driver of global diphtheria incidence, especially since 2005. Reported cases of Diphtheria in India have a fluctuating trend.

"In the upcoming Tetanus Plus (TD) Vaccination Campaign to be started from December 14, the vaccine concerned will be administered to around 42,000 students of the district. They are divided in two batches based on their age. The first batch will be of 11 years plus (not 12 years) and the other batch is of 16 years plus (not 17 years). The vaccine will be administered at 1,500 session sites across the district for a 20-day long period of the campaign. For this purpose, adequate number of health employees, including ANM, ASHA workers and Anganwadi workers have been given training," Dr Gunin Kumar Gogoi stated while addressing media persons. He appealed to the people of the district to come forward to have their wards vaccinated during the programme.

He also appealed to the media persons to extend cooperation in order to conduct the campaign smoothly. Attending the meeting, District Extension and Media Officer Madhab Chandra Phukan and Urban Health officer Dr. Pulok Borgohain briefed about the whole campaign programme in front of media persons.
