Lakhimpur district journalists’ body holds biennial conference with a day-long programme

LAKHIMPUR: The biennial conference of the Lakhimpur District Journalist Association (LDJA) was held in a befitting manner with a day-long programme on Sunday. The event was organized at Lalpani Seuj Khetra at Boginadi under the host of Boginadi Press Club. The event began with the unfurling of LDJA flag by president Majin Sonowal. Then the smriti tarpan and plantation drive was conducted. It was followed by the last executive body meet of the past session with the president in the chair. In the executive body meet, the audit report was approved in addition to holding detailed discussions on several crucial issues of the organization and working journalists.

The general assembly meet was held in the presence of the members of the LDJA which represented various press clubs and guilds of the district under the LDJA district committee. The programme was chaired by Majin Sonowal while the Northeast zone secretary of the Assam Union of Working Journalists (AUWJ), Sailen Baruah was present as observer. In the meet, the 31-member new committee of LDJA was constituted with Tutumoni Phukan as president, Kumud Baruah as working president, Amrit Paban Borah, Jagat Borah and Mukul Saikia as vice-presidents and Manoj Borpatra Gohain as general secretary.

On the other hand, the open session of the event, which was chaired by Majin Sonowal, kicked off with a chorus by the artistes of Shristi Musical Group. It was inaugurated by Sailen Baruah. LDJA secretary Tutumoni Phukan presented the secretarial report of the past session while AUWJ State president Keshab Kalita was present as the chief guest. In his lecture, Keshab Kalita explained the miserable plight of working journalists. “The journalists are just ornamentally honoured as the indispensable part of the fourth pillar of the democracy. But their financial and physical securities have not been ensured till date, as result of which they have to resort to struggle to seek their judicious right,” he added.

Litterateur Bharat Rajkhowa and academician Badan Gogoi were present as the guests of honour. Environmental activist Bikul Goswami released Bedanidhi, the regular publication of the LDJA which was edited by Manoj Borpatra Gohain and Amrit Paban Borah. A set of 14 proposals regarding the wage, job-related issues of journalists, burning problems of Lakhimpur district along other issues were taken up in the public meeting.
