Lakhimpur Medical College likely to be functional from November: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: Assam finance and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the upcoming medical college in Lakhimpur is likely to be functional in the month of November.

Himanta Biswa Sarma also said that the Dhubri and Nagaon Medical Colleges will start from next year. The minister also announced that Biswanath Chariali, Goalpara, Karimganj, and Charaideo will also have medical colleges soon.

Sarma had earlier made this announcement during his address at the 74th Independence Day celebrations in Central Assam's Morigaon district.

"This year we have kickstarted an initiative to establish new medical colleges at Biswanath Chariali, Charaideo, Goalpara and the second one in Guwahati", Sarma said.

At a programme held at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) auditorium today, Sarma distributed appointment letters to 201 staff nurses of Lakhimpur Medical College and 157 doctors, for rural service.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sarma highlighted the achievements in the health sector in the last four years under the BJP-led government.

The Minister said that this year, the Government has completed two medical colleges at Lakhimpur and Diphu. He said that they are completing two other medical colleges next year at Dhubri and Nagaon. On the other hand, 70 percent works of Nalbari Medical College and 60 percent works of Tinsukia Medical College have already been done, Sarma said, adding that several colleges shall be set up in the state within the next few years.

Sarma also stated the Assam government will set up four new medical colleges at Biswanath, Charaideo, Goalpara, and Karimganj. The government is also planning to establish another new medical college in Guwahati.

"We are happy to announce that academic courses at AIIMS Changsari will begin from November 1 this year. The treatment will begin from next year," the health minister further announced.
