Lakshapati Sharma, a leading advocate, standing counsel of Gauhati University, a social worker left for his heavenly abode on October 8 due to illness. Sarma was born on March 18, 1948 at Nalbari and had his early education at Nalbari. He passed matriculation exam from Jagara High School, Nalbari in 1962 and passed Pre-University from Nalbari College in 1964 and passed Praveen Examination in 1966.

Thereafter, Sarma shifted to Guwahati and did his B.A from Pragjyotish College under Gauhati University in 1968 and later passed LLB from University Law College in 1972. He also did diploma of Associate Membership of the Institute of Business Management (India). He later joined in the Bar in the year 1977 and continued his practice till the end of his life.

Sarma mainly concentrated his practice in the field of Civil and Labour cases. He always fought for the cause of retrench labour. He was also the standing counsel of Gauhati University at Gauhati High Court. He was a man of strict discipline and was always vocal for the cause of depressed class. He endured hardship, but due to his integrity, sincerity, and diligence, he became a highly successful lawyer. He was very cordial to juniors. His chamber was open for all and it was a routine affair that a large number of budding lawyers used to attend his chamber.

Sarma participated in many legal awareness camp particularly in the rural areas. He also served as mediator in the proceedings of mediation and always inspired the litigants to settle the disputes in a way of mediation which saves time, money and suffering. The sudden death has cast shadow of gloom among the legal fraternity. His death was condoled by the Gauhati High Court Bar Association and as well as the Gauhati High Court. His death was a big loss for the society which is not easy to fill up. He was 75 years old and survived by his wife and two daughters. On the occasion of his Aadya Shradha I pay my homage to his departed soul.
