SILCHAR: Braving the inclement weather and heavy downpour, people of Silchar on Friday observed the Language Martyrs’ Day in a befitting manner. Early in the morning people of all walks of life gathered at Silchar railway station where the martyrs sacrificed their lives on this day for their mother tongue during the 1961 Language Movement in Barak Valley. 11 picketers were gunned down by the police at the station during a peaceful demonstration against the Language Law. Since then for the last six decades people of Barak Valley has been observing May 19 as Martyrs’ Day.

On Friday various organisations took out procession to the Silchar Smashanghat to pay floral tributes to the martyrs who were cremated here. Later, in the afternoon, people gathered at Gandhibag to pay tribute at Shahid bedi. Various organisations had organized cultural programmes and symposium on the occasion where leading personalities from Kolkata and Bangladesh took part.
