Leather industry! Mann ki Baat stuns Hailakandi

SILCHAR: Appreciative reference to leather products of Hailakandi in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Mann ki Baat' raised quite an eyebrow in the district. In the last episode of his radio talk, Modi said a tiny district like Hailakandi made a remarkable mark in the export of leather products. The reference stirred up immense curiosity among the local residents who were initially ignorant about such a success story of their own district.

However, a thorough and inquisitive search landed them in more surprise. To their utter surprise. Hailakandi had no business with leather products, forget about its remarkable mark in exporting it. S K Nath, general manager of District Industrial Centre (DIC) had recently said, his office had no knowledge of such an industry. However Badarpur, a town in the Karimganj district had a unit that dealt with leather products, a source in the DIC said.

The obvious question that followed the 'Mann ki Baat' reference was who supplies such information to the PMO. Modi's signature radio talk show had a series of such success stories compiled from every nook and corner of the country. The reference to Hailakandi's export quality leather products now raised questions about the authenticity of such information. The district BJP leaders, visibly embarrassed, preferred to refrain from making any comment.
