LAKHIMPUR: A lecture event on “History, Myth and the Battle of Saraighat” was held in North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous). The event was organized by Department of Assamese in the college and it was chaired by Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa, the Head of the Department. Prominent writer-novelist-cum-journalist, Pulin Kalita took part in the lecture event as resource person. He delivered a thought-provoking lecture on the designated topic, based on his research and field studies while going to write his latest historical novel, titled as “Laidhan Khan”, published recently.

“Though several novels in Assamese language had been written centering round different historical events since 19th century, the trend of taking information from history was not seen in them. But the style of writing such novels changed gradually. The astonishing fact is that some mythological characters have contributed a lot to the Assamese social life. This fact comes into light while through study and research is made on them. The studiousness of a writer, his curiosity and zeal for searching the truth can help in taking such characters to the common readers,” the resource person said in connection with his lecture while highlighting some undiscussed facts of the history of Assam, covering a period of 150 years since the reign of Ahom king Pratap Singha. He added that lots of unknown things regarding Assam are available not only in the history of Assam but also in the notes written by the Mughals about the State.

On the other hand, Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa threw light on the contributions of Pulin Kalita to the Assamese literature and said that Kalita is the prominent one among those who are studying the history of Assam seriously. Journalist Priyamjyoti Phukan, Assistant Professor Dr. Dhiraj Pator, students Mahananda Saikia, Bibekananda Gogoi took part in an open session of the lecture event.
