Leopard captured, released in Nambor Reserve Forest

GOLAGHAT/NUMALIGARH: A leopard that had been creating terror in the Athabari area under Golaghat forest division, was captured by forest officials with the help of local people on Sunday night. According to report, the leopard had been creating terror in Athabari area since long. Local people reported the matter to the forest department and the forest officials put a cage in the area and finally on Sunday night, the leopard was caged. Local people gathered in large numbers to see the captured leopard. Later, the forest officials took the leopard to the Nambor Reserve Forest and released it.

Forest Range Officer Pushpadhar Borgohain said, "The caged leopard was a male and the age would be around two to three years. With the support of locals, our forest team acted promptly and we released the leopard a few hours after being caged."

Due to deforestation, the habitat for wildlife is decreasing and wild animals often come out of protected areas and enter human habitats in search of food. Conservationists opine that human-animal conflict is increasing rapidly in Golaghat district and if appropriate measures are not taken on time to restore the wild habitats, the conflict scenario may worsen in the near future.

Former Honorary Wildlife Warden of Golaghat, Arup Ballav Goswami said, "Human greed has no limits. Trees are being felled in an uncontrolled manner in the name of development. There are lessons for mankind to learn from the pandemic and diseases, but we are acting blind. We need to change our mindset and act together to protect and preserve the forests and our wildlife, else worse days are ahead for all of us."
