DOOMDOOMA: Doomdooma Rajahua Rongali Bihu Sanmilan for the first time awarded Litterateur Jogesh Das Commemorative Award to Jayanta Baruah, chairman of Sadin-Pratidin Group of newspapers and the editor of the Assamese daily ‘Asomiya Pratidin’, for his efforts towards uplift of the Assamese language by publishing the Braille edition of the Assamese Dictionary Hemkosh and for his success in enlisting it in the Guinness Book of World Records. The award was instituted from this year in the memory of noted Assamese litterateur, former president of Asom Xahitya Xabha (AXX) Jogesh Das (now deceased) who was born at a tea garden Hansara on the outskirts of Doomdooma. It will be conferred every year during the Bihu celebration on a distinguished person of the state who contribute remarkably in various fields of the society.

The award was conferred on him in the open meeting of the three day long 53rd Doomdooma Rajahuwa Rongali Bihu Sanmilan held at Doomdooma Town Field on Thursday evening with the president of the Bihu Celebration Committee, Dr. Pranab Jyoti Deka in the chair. The award carried a phulam gamosa, a chelleng chadar, one traditional turban, one xarai, one memento and a citation.

Receiving the award, Jayanta Baruah thanked Doomdooma Rajahuwa Rongali Bihu Sanmilan Committee for selecting him for such a prestigious award instituted in the memory of a distinguished litterateur of the State Jogesh Das. The award giving ceremony was also attended by former Doomdooma MLA Dilip Moran, noted Assamese poet Sarifa Khatoon Choudhury, Asom Xahitya Xabha vice-president Dr. Girish Handique, former president of Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha Arjun Baruah, the general secretary of All Moran Students’ Union (AMSU), Debakanta Moran, wife of Jayanta Baruah, Rubi Baruah, working president of the Bihu celebration committee Jitu Deka and Surajit Moran, joint secretary Rana Sonar and Joykanta Moran besides others. The programme was anchored by Manoj Dutta and Abhijit Khataniar.

Various organisations including Doomdooma Press Club, Doomdooma units of AASU, AJYCP, AMSU, AACSU, ATTSA, All Assam Bhojpuri Yuva Chatra Parishad, Doomdooma Chambers of Commerce, Doomdooma Branch of Indian Medical Association felicitated Jayanta Baruah in the meeting.

Earlier, former Doomdooma MLA Dilip Moran inaugurated the meeting while poet Sarifa Khatoon Choudhury inaugurated the souvenir ‘Bihuwan’ published under the joint editorship of Deben Deka and Padmajit Moran. The prizes of various Bihu competitions held during the three day-long Bihu Sanmilan were also distributed among the winners. The programme of the Bihu Sanmilan came to an end on Thursday night with the musical performance of popular Assamese singer Dikshu.
