NAGAON: A section of businessmen has allegedly built commercial structures on government land on the north bank of the Kolong River near the Madhabdev Path at Majorati Chariali. The businessmen are allegedly involved in illegal trade of drugs.

Some local women approached Deputy Commissioner Narendra Kumar Shah and submitted a memorandum in this regard a couple of weeks back, following which DC Narendra Kumar Shah sent a magistrate along with forces to conduct a probe in those illegal commercial establishments. The team was able to seize over 15 kg cannabis from those outlets.

DC Narendra Kumar Shah directed the Nagaon municipality board to conduct an eviction drive against those illegal commercial establishments at Majorati Chariali, sources said, adding that following the strict direction from the Deputy Commissioner, the Nagaon municipality board issued an eviction notice on May 16, asking the owners of the illegal commercial establishments to clear all the illegal structures within three days, failing which the Nagaon municipality board will initiate action on its own to clear the land.

Surprisingly, due to reasons unknown, the Nagaon municipality board postponed the eviction drive. Locals have demanded to carry out a massive eviction drive against the illegal encroachers as early as possible, otherwise they would go for further democratic move against the illegal encroachers as well as the Nagaon municipality board.
