SILCHAR: Deshbhakt Tarun Ram Phukan High School, which is the only Assamese medium school in south Assam's Silchar, has received a notice from the state government regarding a merger with a Bengali medium school. The merger, if takes place, will make the school a part of the bi-lingual institution for children.

Located near Silchar Tennis Club, Park Road, the school was established in the year 1953. As per reports, the order by the Assam government states that there should be a minimum of 30 students in a school's every class so that it runs smoothly and gets funds from the government, but the Assamese school has only 31 students in total from class I to VIII. As such, questions are naturally being raised about the lone Assamese school's survival in the coming days.

The department of education, Assam, in the recent order, stated, "to ascertain standard teacher-pupil ratio, optimum services of the employees, saving administration cost and other expenses of the school, we have decided that the schools situated in the same campus or any nearby area should be amalgamated. All the schools should be brought into one single administrative and academic unit under SikshaKhetra – a scheme for the merger of different schools."

The school's headmistress Pravina Sultana Begum said the school is the sole Assamese school in the area (Silchar), but it neither has adequate students nor it is receiving support from the government because of which it will not be possible to keep it running. Instructions have been given to merge the school and make it bi-lingual, she said.
