LAKHIMPUR: Responding to the clarion call of the Asom Rajyik Prathamik Shikshak Sanmilani (ARPSS), the teachers of the Lower Primary schools staged massive protest programme in Lakhimpur district on Saturday.
The members of the organization under the banner of Lakhimpur Mahkuma Prathamik Shikshak Sanmilani, led by president Rajen Phukan and secretary Deba Borah, gheraoed the office of the District Elementary Education Officer for three hours.
By staging the protest programme, the organization reiterated its demand to create posts for headmasters in lower primary schools and to roll back decision to withdraw graduate teachers' grade pay of Rs. 8,700. Prior to it, the members of the organization assembled at the office of the Lakhimpur Mahkuma Prathamik Shikshak Sanmilani. Then they took out a protest rally covering North Lakhimpur town and proceeded towards the DEEO office shouting slogans. The organization submitted a memorandum to the State Education Minister in support of the demands.
Notably, the Asom Rajyik Prathamik Shikshak Sanmilani, after staging various protest programmes in the past years, resorted to comprehensive non-cooperation during the February session of the Assam Legislative Assembly in support of the demands. Around 36,000 primary schools across the State were affected while the organization initiated the agitation programme. But the agitation was not potent enough to melt the ice of Dispur and it compelled the teachers to reinitiate the stir on Saturday. The Dhakuakhana Mahkuma Prathamik Shikshak Sanmilani also initiated similar protest programme in Dhakuakhana subdivision on the same day.
