Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu 2022 has arrived and people across the state are all set to celebrate the festive occasion with great joy and happiness. Magh Bihu is one of the most auspicious festivals of Assam and is regarded as the pride of the whole community.

The occasion of Magh Bihu marks the end of harvesting season brings a new beginning and hopes for people. The festival is much related to Pongal, Sankranti and Lohri celebrations across the country.

Magh Bihu is all about bonfires, tasty dishes, brotherhood and sweets prepared at home. The festival continues for two days among various communities following important rituals.

Bhelaghor is prepared on Uruka night. The houses made of Bamboo and tress leaves known by locals as Bhelghar play a very crucial role in Magh Bihu and this ritual mark the beginning of the festival. The same Bhelaghar turned into Meji when it is meant to be set ablaze on the next day.

Uruka is something related to the activities done in the field during the night prior to the main Magh Bihu day. The relatives and neighbours come together on the night before and roast various types of food like muwa aloo (potato) and mitha aloo( sweet potato).

People in different villages of Assam builds houses of Bamboo called Meji which is set ablaze on the second next day of Bihu. The firing of Meji is worshipped by people wishing to bring joy and prosperity at the end of the harvest period. Various types of offerings are offered to Agni Dev (Fire God).

1. Covid vaccine theme Meji in Raha area of Ahotguri, Jorhat Assam. People of the area this year has come up with a unique idea and awareness theme of preparing the Bhelaghar that is much related to the present situation.

2. Burj Khalifa theme Bhelaghor in Jhelkajhar Bongaigaon. The Bhelaghar in Jhelkajhar is made a mini version of the tallest building in the world known as Burj Khalifa.

3. Eagle theme Bhelaghor in Assam Bongaigaon. People in Bongaigaon have made a beautiful Eagle depiction of Bhalaghor representing bird during the auspicious occasion. 

4. Temple theme Bhelaghor in Majuli: The temple structure Bhela Ghar in river island Majuli is depicting the artistic skills associated with it.

5. Dhakaukhana Bhela Ghar: This house structure seems common but beautiful made with lots of effort by the villagers.

6. Bamboo Bhela Ghar in Guwahati: The residence of the Guwahati city decided on a traditional Bhelaghor that is made using just Bamboo.
