Tezpur: District Magistrate Manvendra Pratap Singh has issued a show cause notice to Medical Director of Baptist Christian Hospital (BCH), Tezpur after the hospital authorities failed to handle a patient admitted to the hospital with Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) in the line of COVID-19 cases.
The patient, a 44-year male, of a remote village of Sonitpur district was admitted to BCH, Tezpur on April 7 with symptoms of SARI and later passed away on the same day. As per present government protocol, all SARI cases should be tested for presence of COVID-19, irrespective of travel and contact history. The Baptist Christian Hospital authorities did not refer the case to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital, which is a designated hospital for treating all COVID-19 cases in Sonitpur district. The District Magistrate in his show cause notice to BCH authorities has cited ‘gross negligence and dereliction of duty of treating doctors’ at the hospital.
On expiry of the patient, the case report of the patient was examined by a committee of Tezpur Medical College and Hospital and he was tested and found negative for COVID-19.
“You are hereby asked to show cause why FIR shall not be lodged against you for violation of regulation of Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897 and Disaster Management Act 2005 within 3 days,” the order read.
