TINSUKIA: With the reverberation of drums and blowing of conch shells, Mahalaya was celebrated in Tinsukia with fervour and gaiety. An unexpected number of crowds in festive attires gathered at Thana Chariali to witness the street drama on Mahshasur Mardini in the morning. The event held for 7 successive years was organized by Sanskrit Samonny Unnayan Samiti and Tinsukia regional committee of All Assam Bengali Youth Students Federation in association with Inner Wheel Club Tinsukia and Gagriti Dance Academy. According to Supriyo Dey SSUS president, such street drama on the occasion of Mahalaya is being held at a few places of Assam and only in Tinsukia in upper Assam.

KALAIGAON: The devotees of Balipara observed Shubho Mahalaya which started at around 4 am with the theme of war between Goddess Durga and Mahishura. As part of the celebration, nearly 20 artistes from Balipara Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee, without any professional training, gave a lively performance of Shubho Mahalaya, a unique live-street programme, in the centre of Balipara Bazar. More than 1,000 people gathered to see the lively performance of Shubho Mahalaya in Balipara on Saturday.

On the occasion, the devotees also took out a colourful procession with the artistes from Balipara Sarbajanin Durga Puja Mandir to Bhehguri Sarbajanin Durga Puja Mandir. Rajib Roy, secretary of Balipara Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee said that this programme would be staged every year at day break on Mahalaya.

DIBRUGARH: People across Dibrugarh observed Mahalaya with great enthusiasm. Some people performed tarpan on the occasion of Mahalaya. Bengali women wearing traditional attire took out a Prabhat pheri. People paid homage to their forefathers on Saturday on account of ‘Mahalaya Amavasya’. “Every year we come out in this particular day and perform tarpan for our forefathers. Mahalaya has been a auspicious day for the people of Hindu religion,” said a devotee.
