Bokajan: In a tragic incident, a person from Lakhimpur district drowned in the Dhansiri river after he was swept away by the downstream current while trying to save a female friend in Bokajan on Thursday.

As reported, the person along with three other female friends were walking on the river side when the tragedy struck. “One of the females went to the river bank to wash her feet but slipped off and fell into the swollen river. Seeing her fall, the person jumped into the river attempting to save her from drowning. The other female companions raised a hue and cry and a farmer who was working in his field nearby came to their aid and rescued the drowning female.

“However, the other person was swept away by the downstream current and vanished underwater,” said a police officer. Meanwhile, a team of SDRF divers, who were pressed into action for a search operation, spotted and recovered the body on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Amrit Pal Singh of Lakhimpur, Assam. Amrit had been in Bokajan to visit a friend here.
