BONGAIGAON: One person died in Chirang district as a result of man-elephant conflict on Wednesday. The incident took place in Bishnupur Bazar No-1 under Bijni subdivision of Chirang district where Adhar Medhi (65) was killed by a wild elephant. Local people said that Adhar had a tea stall at Bishnupur bazaar. "At about 4.30 am today, he came to open his shop when a wild elephant suddenly came in front of him and trampled him to death. This is the second incident in this area within a span of seven days," local people said.

Later, an angry mob of people, along with activists of BTC Bengali Yuba Chatra Federation, staged a protest against the forest department of Chirang. The people claimed that though such incidents had been taking place in the area since a long time repeatedly, the forest department had done nothing for the protection of villagers. The mob also demanded compensation of Rs 19 lakh for the victim's family. Later, administrative and forest officials from Chirang arrived there and assured to help the victim's family and protect the villagers. On the other hand, in a different incident, an elephant died at the Natun Mati Sector B of the India-Bhutan border in Chirang. As per sources, the elephant came in contact with an electric wire in the campus of a person named Arun Narzary and the elephant was electrocuted.
