DIGBOI/TINSUKIA: Exhibiting an excellent example of coordination, Tinsukia police and 73 Brigade of Indian Army, netted a self-styled divisional engineer of Power Grid Corporation of India along with his wife from one of the hotels in Tinsukia here on Thursday evening.
The apprehended self-claimed official with a fake identity card reportedly stationed in neighboring Arunachal's Changlang district was identified as 37- year- old Md Hayat Khatib, a resident of Karnataka. His wife Samina Yakub (24), a resident of Jammu & Kashmir, was also staying in the hotel when the duo was brought under the legal fold for investigation.
A source said that the couple were staying in the posh hotel in Tinsukia since August 16. A source at the security agency said, "We launched an operation based on specific inputs.
"The person, who had been impersonating himself as a divisional engineer of Power Grid Corporation of India carrying fake documents and was staying in a hotel, was having an extramarital affair with a Tinsukia woman," said Debajit Doeri, the Superintendent of Police, adding "He was bargaining with another person with regard to a CSR-related project in one of the sites under Power Grid Corporation of India."
"We are yet to reach to a definite conclusion in regard to the apprehended person, whether or not the individual in question has any nexus with any anti-social elements or groups or the exact nature of the person and his activities," said the top cop of the district. "Registering a suo moto case, we will investigate into the matter connecting all possible dots," he added further
Meanwhile, the Indian Army, while terming the notorious individual as a 'suspected ISI operative', said that 75 percent of the contacts on his mobile phones were well-placed officials, bureaucrats, security personnel politicians, and police top brass, including an IGP.
"The person with suspected background, as supported by the fake ID card, is under investigation.Soon it will be asserted whether or not the person has some nexus with any anti-social group or has any perverted design concerning the security of the nation," said an army source.
Repudiating the media content of one of the English news portals, the SP of Changlang, Mihin Gambo said that the person in question was never heard of as staying or working in the Changlang district.
"No investigating agencies or Assam Police or whatsoever contacted me for counter-verification in this regard," he said. "There are no ISI operatives and their activities are not reported anywhere here in Changlang district," asserted Gambo.
During interrogation, the arrested individual claimed that his father was a retired State Cadre officer and he visited Tinsukia several occasions earlier on business purpose.
