MANGALDAI: Mangaldai College has been declared as a tobacco-free educational institution on Friday. A certificate was presented to the college authority on the occasion. Befitting the occasion, the District Health Society & District Tobacco Control Cell, Darrang, in collaboration with IQAC, Mangaldai College, organized a programme on training for teachers and students on tobacco free educational institutions.
Dr. HS Suri, Joint Director of Health Services, Darrang, delivered the inaugural speech. Taking part in it, the resource persons Arzoo Dutta, Sr. Consultant, National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), Assam and Dr. N K Beriya, Nodal Officer of District Tobacco Control Cell stressed the need to maintain tobacco free environment in college campus and its surroundings and also to make the society aware of the serious harms of tobacco on health. Dr. Shahidul Islam of Darrang Cancer Hospital highlighted the adverse effects of tobacco both in smoke and non smoke forms which happened to be one of the prime reasons of oral cancer.
Priyanka Kakati, Regional Coordinator of The International Union explained the Tobacco Monitoring App which can be used to lodge complaints if anyone is found to have used tobacco within 100 yards of any public institution. Earlier Dr. Santosh Borkakati, Coordinator of IQAC, Mangaldai College, welcomed the guests and participants. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Barnali Deka.
