LAKHIMPUR: Along with the rest of the nation, strong reaction against the parading of two disrobed women, who were allegedly gang raped, by a group of people in Manipur’s Kangkopi district on May 4, continues in Lakhimpur district too. In addition to other organizations, the Lakhimpur district unit of the Jatiya Mahila Parishad, the sister organization of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), has also demanded capital punishment the culprits involved in the gruesome crime while condemning the same vehemently.

Notably, the horrific video of two women being paraded naked on a road by a group of people in Manipur has been shared widely on social media, drawing massive condemnation and calls for action. The two women were gang-raped in a field as per allegation of a tribal organisation. The incident happened on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, around 35 km away from Imphal, the capital of Manipur, according a statement by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF).

In support of the demand over the case, AJYCP-Jatiya Mahila Parishad, Lakhimpur district committee, submitted a memorandum to the President of India on Tuesday through the Deputy Commissioner of the district. In the memorandum, AJYCP-Jatiya Mahila Parishad, Lakhimpur district committee president Lakhi Bhorali, secretary Reziya Begum said that as many as 200 people lost their life in the four-month long bloodshed in Manipur due to the communal clash between Meitei and Kuki communities.

“In these four months in the State concerned, many girls and women have become the victims of rape and sexual assault. Many children of tender age have been burnt alive. Amid such inhumane environment, two helpless Kuki women were allegedly gang-raped by a group of savage people. This obnoxious crime has degraded the status of India, maligned the glory of the nation in the globe. Our organization has vehemently condemned the heinous act.”

The memorandum further said, “At present, Manipur has turned into a killing ground of humanity due to the unexpected communal clash between the two communities. But the matter of serious concern is that the Government of Manipur, led by Chief Minister N Biren Singh, has miserably failed to control the law and order in the State. Despite such circumstances, the government at the Centre has paid no heed to the demands raised across the nation to dissolve the Government of Manipur, led by N Biren Singh. AJYCP-Jatiya Mahila Parishad is also convinced that the incumbent Government of Manipur should be dissolved in order to restore peace in the State permanently.”

Through the same memorandum, AJYCP-Jatiya Mahila Parishad, Lakhimpur district committee urged for the intervention of the President of India over the Manipur issue and to ensure capital punishment to the culprits.
