SILCHAR: Cachar police arrested a suspected Manipur based Liberation Tigers of Tribals (LTT) extremist from Joypur Harinagar area under Udharbond constituency on Thursday evening. The youth who was seen roaming in the road flashing a revolver was identified as Saimuthang Alsi of Zinamghat in Dima Hasao. A pistol and two live cartridges were recovered from him. Later Saimuthang was quizzed in the office of the Police Super by the top cops of the district.
SP Nomal Mahato informed the mediapersons that Saimuthan and some other caders of the militant outfit were involved in drug smuggling and extortion.
Top leaders of the Manipur based militant outfit had surrendered arms to the Chief Minister M Biren Singh in July this year. But a splinter group of LTT was still active particularly in Tamelong district of Manipur, some parts of Mizoram, Cachar and Dima Hasao. They extort money from small traders and commoners.
In 2020, two youths were killed in mob attack in Joypur area as they tried to extort money from the local traders. The incident triggered much tension. Later, an outpost of Assam Rifles was set up in Harinagar. For last two years, the Joypur Harinagar area did not face any threat from the militant outfits of the neighbouring state. But the Assam Rifles outpost was withdrawn from Harinagar area three months back. Local people feared militant activities would again start.
