Assam Health, finance and education minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that many Congress leaders are likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections. This came after Lakhimpur MLA Rajdeep Goala and former Borkhola MLA Rumi Nath were expelled from Congress for indulging in anti-party activities amid reports doing the rounds that they might be joining BJP.

According to Sarma, many tribal leaders will soon join the saffron party. And asserted that Goala will join the BJP. ''Not only Rajdeep Goala, many Congress leaders who love the country and many other tribal leaders will also BJP before the polls. Those who love India and Assam will remain in BJP,'' Sarma added.

Over 700 members including leaders of UBPO joined the BJP yesterday at a grand function held in Guwahati.

A host of actors and singers too have joined the saffron party over the past few days.
