Guwahati: Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi on Tuesday surrendered his Personal Security Officers (PSO).

Taking to micro-blogging site twitter today he informed the same and shared a letter addressed to the Jorhat SP.

''Under the strong and able leadership of Hon'ble CM @himantabiswa Sir and the policies undertaken for ensuring peace and security, today our people are feeling safe. So as a sign of this, from today onwards I have personally decided to surrender my #PSO,'' he tweeted.

Notably, three PSOs were deployed with MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi.

After surrendering his PSO, the MLA also urged the other MLAs to surrender the PSOs soon.

Earlier in this month, the Assam government had adopted a new policy to provide PSO. From now the government will provide security to only those holding constitutional posts.

Making this announcement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said, "PSOs cannot be status symbols. The Cabinet today adopted a new PSO policy. If anyone not holding constitutional posts needs PSOs, the SP can provide it only for ten days and the DGP for 30 days''.

''If the person needs PSOs for more than one month, the matter will come to the state-level committee led by the Chief Minister,'' he added
