Martyr Journalist Kamala Saikia Remembered in Sivasagar

GAURISAGAR: Kamala Saikia, a courageous journalist of Dikhowmukh on the outskirts of Gaurisagar in Sivasagar district, was brutally killed by unidentified miscreants on August 9, 1991. Even after 28 years of his death, his culprits have not been nabbed.

On the occasion of his 28th death anniversary, Konwerpur Press Club in Sivasagar organized a memorial lecture on Friday to recall his sacrifice and dedication. The programme stated with lighting of earthen oil lamp before the portrait of martyr journalist Kamala Saikia by Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Dr S Lakshmanan.

Later, a memorial lecture was held under the chairperson of Padum Kr Saikia, president of Konwer Press Club. Sarat Sensuwa, secretary of APCU Sivasagar District Committee, inaugurated it. He gave a brief note about Kamala Saikia. Addressing the gathering, Monuj Singh, president of APCU, lamented that the government had failed to nab the culprits involved in the Kamala Saikia murder case. He added that in the last three decades, a total of 32 journalists across the State had been killed by miscreants but the government was yet to nab the culprits.

Dipak Arandhara, Headmaster of Nakatani High School, took part as a distinguished guest and briefly spoke about the life and achievements of journalist Kamala Saikia. In the function, Konwerpur Press Club felicitated Sivasagar DC Dr S Lakshmanan, DIPRO Syeda Hasnahana, cultural activist Robin Saikia, educationist Purnanonda Saikia and sportsperson Choitannya Neog for their outstanding contribution to the society. Journalists Mriganka Hazarika and Reetuparna Bharali were also felicitated for receiving media awards instituted by the Media Federation of India, Assam Branch and APCU.

The 28th death anniversary of martyr journalist Saikia was also observed at his birth place Dikhowmukh under the aegis of Kamala Saikia Smriti Rakshya Samiti, Dikhowmukh Press Club and AASU, Dikhowmukh Anchalik Committee.
