TINSUKIA: The Barekuri Anchalik Yuba Sangha organized a mass protest against illicit drugs at Makum in the Tinsukia district on Thursday.

Hundreds of women from Barekuri, Borgaon, Makum also joined the rally and later submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Tinsukia, urging him to award exemplary punishment to drug peddlers by legal means.

Addressing the media, Manab Chutia, general secretary of Barekuri Anchalik Yuba Sangha, said that despite police crackdown on drug peddlers and consumers, there was no abatement to drug menace. The entire Tinsukia district, particularly rural areas, is under the grip of substance users, said Chutia, adding that the number of habitual offenders was also increasing. They have sought immediate intervention of the Chief Minister to save youths from getting ruined.
