DIBRUGARH: At least 60 villages were affected due to massive hailstorm which hit Dibrugarh on Tuesday morning.

For the first time, Dibrugarh witnessed such a massive hailstorm. People came out of their houses to enjoy the weather but on the other side, due to the hailstorm house were damaged in many areas of the Dibrugarh district.

Talking to the correspondent, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Dibrugarh project officer, Deepjyoti Hatikakoti said, "The hailstorm has affected at least 60 villages in the district. Around 301 households of 37 villages in Moran Revenue circle and 202 households of 21 villages of Tingkhang revenue circle have been affected. One government LP school under Dibrugarh East revenue circle has also been affected. Nagachapari LP School in Lahowal area was badly damaged. In Dibrugarh west revenue circle, two villages and five households of Lekai sub-centre have been affected."

Pictures of roads covered in white after the hailstorm lashed parts of the Dibrugarh district have gone viral on social media. The temperature dropped even further, with the Indian Meteorological Department forecasting more rain in north-eastern states. "For the first time, we have witnessed such massive hailstorm in Moran. Small children were seen collecting hail and enjoying on the streets of Moran," said Amit Dey, a resident of Moran.

On the other hand, the hailstorm damaged crops in Moran and its nearby areas. "For last couple of days, the temperature in upper Assam has dipped due to severe cold. We had not seen rainfall in the month of December earlier. Nowadays, the weather has changed due to the impact of climate change," he said.
