Haflong: Against the proposed division of Dima Hasao on communal lines, various apex bodies, student organizations and NGOs of Haflong organized a massive peace rally at Haflong on Monday which received huge participation from various communities of Dima Hasao.
The rally was started from the Cultural Institute Hall and marched through the major parts of Haflong town up to Council Rotary and converged in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner.
Several speakers from various communities participating in the peace rally said that the district of Dima Hasao had recovered from various crises and development had taken a momentum. Therefore, most of the citizens of Dima Hasao do not want any unpleasant situation to prevail in the district. Peace has become the foremost need and it should be maintained at any cost, they said.
Later, a representation against the proposed bifurcation of Dima Hasao district on communal lines was submitted to State Finance Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma through the Deputy Commissioner of Dima Hasao by various apex bodies, student organizations and NGOs.
In the representation it was stated that the signatories, on behalf of the peace-loving people of Dima Hasao, were opposed to the proposed demand of the Indigenous People’s Forum (IPF) for disintegration of the existing greater Dima Hasao district and for creation of separate autonomous district with separate autonomous council, which in fact was on communal lines.
