DIBRUGARH: The winner of the latest season of one of the biggest cooking shows of the country, MasterChef India arrived at the Mohanbari Airport on Saturday as huge crowds gathered to welcome him.

The seventh season of MasterChef India ended on Thursday. It was the first time that anyone from Assam had made it to the finals of the tournament, and that too, both the finalist. So no matter who won the tournament, the trophy’s coming to the state were known ahead of the final round.

This was the first time since its inception that the trophy came to the hands of an Assamese person and happiness and pride were clearly visible on the faces of the people who went to the airport to greet Nayanjyoti Saikia. People had gathered at the Mohanbari Airport in Dibrugarh since before the winner landed.

Once he came out of the terminal, people greeted him with flowers and traditional phulam gamochas. A large number of enthusiasts also clicked selfies with the winner who is a resident of Gobindapur in the Tinsukia district of Assam. A rally was also taken out to accompany him from the airport to his home in Gobindapur.

Chef Vikas Khanna shared a photo of himself and Nayanjyoti holding the trophy on Twitter and mentioned, “Nayan, your journey from the hidden kitchen in your bedroom to the vastness of the Universe. You make us all believe that if we are honest, work hard, focused, learn, train nonstop and stay calm... the victory is ours. Presenting to you the winner of 1.4 billion hearts and MasterChef. Bless you, Nayan.”

Santa Sharma, who had to settle for the runners-up position belongs to the Amlighat region of the Morigaon District of Assam. Nayanjyoti Saikia received the trophy of MasterChef 7, Chef Coat and a cash reward of Rs 25 lakhs. Santa Sarma received the runner-up trophy and a cash prize of Rs 5 lakhs. Another participant from Assam, Nazia Sultana was also in the top 10 leagues of the season.
