DHUBRI: A media orientation programme on child protection was organized by Dhubri Press Club at Lions Club Auditorium which was presided over by president of Dhubri Press Club, Rajib Sarma on Tuesday. Speaking at the programme as resource person and chief guest, Assam’s Bureau Chief of Press Trust of India (PTI), Durba Ghose spoke at a length on the protection, prohibition and violation of children’s right.

“Though many laws were enacted in India to protect the rights of the children long back, but due to non-implementation of them in letter and spirit, children’s rights are still being violated even today and one among the various rights, child marriage, emerges as the biggest concern for society,” Ghose added. While appealing media persons of Dhubri district, she said that in this prevailing scenario in the state and country as well, media has an important role to play to erase the stigma from this civil society by highlighting and sensitising the issue of child marriage along with other issues related to the child protection.

On issue of child protection, Prof Parveen Sultana from P.B.College, chairman of Dhubri District Child Welfare Committee, Binoy Bhattacharjee, chairman of Dhubri Municipal Board, Dr. Debamoy Sanyal and Dhubri District Assistant Commissioner, Jagadish Brahma also addressed media persons on aspects raging from mental health to legal aspects and gender equality and called upon them to come forward and highlight the issues of child protection.

Earlier, purpose of the programme was explained by general secretary of Dhubri Press Club, Nurul Amin. Nearly 50 media persons across Dhubri district participated in the programme.
