GUWAHATI: In a remarkable achievement, two swimmers from Assam have completed their quest of making a world record by swimming 110 kilometres from Colombo to Chennai in just 19 hours.
On Tuesday 29 March the swimming master Babul Gurung and one of his students Kasturi Gogoi started to swim from Munar Island of Colombo in Sri Lanka during the evening hours.
On Wednesday 30 March, the student-teacher duo from Assam reached the Indian shores near Archul Mulai in Tamil Nadu's capital city Chennai by swimming across the Indian Ocean.
The trainer Gurung and his trainee Gogoi have successfully completed their quest on Wednesday creating a world record to enter the Guinness Book of Records.
Both the swimmers crossed all obstacles in the 19-hour journey and the total distance they covered during the course of time was 110 kms.
The All-Indian Swimming Federation (AISF) provided all required aid to the swimming pair that they needed to complete the journey.
Moreover, the Indian Navy as well as Sri Lankan Navy took initiative in the arrangements and extended support to the two swimmers.
In addition, the Assam government in association with the Assam Swimming Association also assisted the trainer and student duo in their attempt of making a world record
Most notably, Kasturi Gogoi and Babul Gurung are the first from the entire northeastern states to attempt the feat of swimming across the Indian Ocean.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare of Assam, Bimal Borah took to his Twitter account to wish and congratulate two swimmers from Assam for their big success.
Kasturi Gogoi is a 10-year-old swimming sensation from northeastern state of Assam who earlier won a medal in the National Sea Swimming championship.
Ace Swimmer Babul Gurung is a National gold medalist swimmer from Assam and a swimming coach. He is the first gold medalist in the Assam National Open Water Sea- Swimming competition.
