DIBRUGARH: A meeting, jointly convened by Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan and Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha, was held at the DC's conference room on Thursday with a single agenda - what measures are to be adopted for solving the artificial flood problem in Dibrugarh. The meeting, attended by local MLA Prasanta Phukan, discussed at length about the causes and remedies of artificial flood.

The meeting also discussed the flow of excess water through Maijan Beel and other sources like Mohanbari Bebejia, which they felt was one of the major reasons for the recent unprecedented artificial flood in the town. After threadbare discussion, the meeting directed the Water Resources Department to utilize all the pump sets laid at different places for pumping out flood water from the town. He also asked them to look into the efficacy of pumping out water. Deputy Commissioner Jha also instructed the District Disaster Management Department to take initiatives to install a high power pump permanently in order to pump out excess water during monsoon season.

He also asked the department to make a field survey on necessity of digging of cross drainage system or similar measures in the nearby areas of PWD roads and National Highway Division with a special reference to identify the places where it needed to be constructed. The meeting also directed ADC Ranjit Konwar, who is also the executive officer of the Dibrugarh Municipality Board, to take all administrative measures under Disaster Management Act for cleaning of clogged drains of Railway, all encroachments and blockade of drains.

The meeting was attended by District Development Commissioner Sanjay Dutta, ADCs, Rajiv Thapa, Dipu Kumar Deka and senior officials of PWD and Water Resource Department.
