SHILLONG : Meghalaya is taking up constant efforts to expand and boost the tourism sector of the state. In a view to accelerate the industry, the state has decided to establish tourism as a regulated sector. 

The tourism department is bringing up new initiatives and moulding the existing ones in such a way that it attracts tourist from all over the world and experience the culture rich state of Meghalaya. The state administration has discussed to invest more in the tourism sector. 

It is not an alien fact that Meghalaya's scenic beauty is hard to compete with. The government can sense a huge number of tourist from domestic and international states in the coming days. The tourism sector is expecting tourists around 15 lakh from every corner by 2024. 

The concerned authorities are continuously putting up ideas to improve facilities and infrastructures in a viable manner. The state is planning to promote ecotourism and locally made items produced by the farmers of the state. A tourism study revealed that the prime cause of slow growth tourism sector is due to the bare minimum or lack of accommodation. 

Meghalaya celebrated the Cherry Blossom festival, which is witnessed by people from all over the world. Long with that, Shillong Literary Festival also engages people from various regions in the state. Recently, Meghalaya also organised the Megha Kayak Festival where kayakers from the all over the world visited the event. 

The government is also imparting training to workers as on how to serve the tourists in the region. If maintained professionally, then through these training several people can get employment. 

The training are given by agencies such as IHM, FCI, ETPL India, B-ABLE Avenues and so on. Approximately 1,410 youths were given training in the past few months among which , 574 have been assigned roles in the tourism sector. The idea of Homestays was also initiated to provide an opportunity to the citizens of the state in order to start off their own businesses.
