GUWAHATI: In an alarming incident reported on Monday, a youth from Meghalaya was arrested in Assam's Goalpara district after a hand-made pistol was seized from his possession. The individual in custody has been identified as Enamul Haque, a resident of Phulbari in Meghalaya. The arrest came about as a result of specific intelligence received by the police, pointing to Haque's involvement in selling pistols in the Simolabari area of Lakhipur.

The operation leading to Enamul Haque's arrest was carried out by the Officer-in-Charge of the Dhumerghat Police Station. The police conducted search operations at Simolabari Tiniali, ultimately resulting in Haque's apprehension and the seizure of the hand-made pistol.

This incident sheds light on a broader issue of illegal arms trade in the region. Earlier in May, another operation in Assam's Karimganj district led to the arrest of three individuals in possession of a .32mm pistol. The arrested youths were identified as Mumim Uddin, Mohammed Ibrahim, and Jainal Ahmed. Acting on a tip-off, the police conducted an operation at Naka checking in Alekargool area, intercepting a scooter carrying the suspects and subsequently seizing the pistol and scooter.

During the initial interrogation of the three youths, they revealed that the pistol was purchased from Dimapur in Nagaland, and they had intentions to sell it in Assam.

The incident involving Enamul Haque and the previous arrest of the three individuals highlight the pressing concern of illegal arms trafficking in the region. The ease with which these weapons are procured from neighboring states poses a significant threat to public safety and security. The authorities must take stringent measures to curb such illegal activities and apprehend those involved in this dangerous trade.

The incident also raises questions about the sources and networks fueling the illegal arms trade. A thorough investigation and collaboration between the police forces of neighboring states are crucial to dismantle these criminal networks and prevent further proliferation of firearms.

It is imperative for law enforcement agencies to intensify their efforts to identify and neutralize such networks involved in the illegal arms trade, working towards a safer and more secure environment for the residents of the region.

In conclusion, the arrest of Enamul Haque in possession of a hand-made pistol in Assam's Goalpara district exposes the alarming issue of illegal arms trade in the region. This incident, along with the previous arrest of three individuals, emphasizes the need for a concerted effort by law enforcement agencies to tackle this menace and ensure public safety.
