KOKRAJHAR: The denizens of Kokrajhar have vehemently opposed the move to merge up the existing RN Brahma Civil Hospital located in the heart of Kokrajhar town with the Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital situated at Besorgaon, 9 km North of Kokrajhar town. The citizens of Kokrajhar demanded that the RN Brahma Civil Hospital, the only premier hospital of BTC region should not be shifted from the present location.

The civil hospital was named after the then veteran tribal political leader and minister Rupnath Brahma who was also a great Bodo writer hailing from Owabari near Kokrajhar town. The hospital has 200 beds. It was established in 1954 by late Rupnath Brahma himself when he was minister of Assam and later, the hospital was re-christened as Rupnath Brahma Civil Hospital. The hospital is equipped with many modern machineries and it is giving tremendous service to people of lower Assam.

Visiting the hospital premises, MCLA of BTC Doneswar Goyary on Friday said it was unfortunate that the present State government was not in a position to run the existing RN Brahma Civil Hospital, Kokrajhar due to reason known to them and the BTR government headed by Pramod Boro who dreamt to make Kokrajhar a mini Switzerland. He said citizens of Kokrajhar had vehemently opposed the move to shift the premier hospital to Medical College and Hospital which is 10 km away from the existing site.

Goyary said the Commissioner and Secretary to Health, Assam had sent an order to shift RN Brahma Civil Hospital with Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital, Besorgaon from January 21. He said the Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital was not inaugurated yet but the order for merger of civil hospital was a matter of surprise. He also said the shifting of staff, equipment, operation theatre and machineries was not possible within an hour of order. He demanded that the civil hospital should not be shifted and merged up with Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital for the interest of people.
