Meteorological Centre Warns Of Heavy Rainfall In Four Districts Of Assam

Guwahati: A heavy rainfall alert has been issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in four districts of  Assam on April 19.

Widespread rainfall across the state till April 22 has been predicted by the RMC in its daily update on April 18. Four districts - Dhubri, South Salmara - Mankachar, Goalpara and Kokrajhar is expected to receive heavy rainfall on April 19.

"Thunderstorm with wind speed up to 50 to 60 kmph accompanied with hail very likely at isolated (in the aforementioned districts)," the warning read.

To add to it, the probability of rainfall in all other districts of the state is quite high for the next four days. To put it in numbers, the likelihood of rainfall stands at 50 to 75 percent.

It is to be noted that there were thunderstorms in three of the districts on alert, in the last four days, barring South Salmara - Mankachar. One casualty has been reported in Assam's Goalpara as a result of it.

Meanwhile, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), on April 17, said that the death toll due to severe storms, lightning, and heavy rainfall in the state has climbed to 14.

Notably, thunderstorms and rains have lashed several parts of the state since April 14.

"At least four people were killed in a thunderstorm in Tingkong revenue village in Dibrugarh district on Friday evening after a strong storm lashed out and uprooted trees in the area," Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Dibrugarh district project officer, Deepjyoti Hatikakoti was quoted as saying by media reports.

In addition to this, three more persons lost their lives in a storm in Barpeta district on April 14 and a 15-year-old boy died in lightning in Goalpara district.

At least 7,378 houses and other establishments have been damaged in the state during the last two days, it added.

The IMD has predicted rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm or lightning in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during the next five days.
