LAKHIMPUR: Ashok Singhal, Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs and Irrigation, visited the Lakhimpur district on Thursday with a day-long programme. During the visit to the district, Singhal at first took stock of the progress of the ongoing construction works of the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) being set up by the side of Lakhimpur by-pass at Saboti area.
Then the minister inspected the preparation and rehearsal of the Bihuwas and Bihuwotis of Lakhimpur who are to take part in the largest Bihu dance performance to be held in Guwahati on April 14 in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to register a world record. Notably, a total of 700 Bihuwas and Bihuwotis will take part in the said event from Lakhimpur. For this purpose, the minister visited the Bihu rehearsal camps at Naoboicha High School playground and Tyag Kshetra of North Lakhimpur town and interacted with the Bihu enthusiastic youths there. He encouraged them to practice Bihu dance with vigour and indomitable spirit to establish Bihu in international platform.
Then the minister visited the North Lakhimpur dumping ground at Ward No. 14 and inspected the legacy waste management plant through which North Lakhimpur Municipal Board (NLMB) managed to treat over 70,000 metric ton legacy waste registering a record in the State. There he expressed overwhelming satisfaction on seeing the resultative process of the plant with regard to treating the waste.
The minister took part in a ceremonial programme organized on the occasion of the World No-Waste Day. Speaking on the occasion, Singhal laid stress on removal of encroachments from the government land causing threat to the drainage system of the urban areas. In this connection, he appealed to the people to extend their unselfish cooperation to the government and the local administration. He also called upon the people to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in their native areas at any cost and create a healthy environment combating pollution.
Ashok Singhal then inaugurated 1,000 streetlights set up in North Lakhimpur town. Notably, a section of businessmen of North Lakhimpur town under Chamber of Commerce extended their helping hands in setting up the streetlights and their maintenance. Prior to it, the minister visited the Agriculture Department’s Conversion Centre and agriculture farm located at Sukulibhoria, Rahdhala Pukhuri, Tennis Court, Planetarium, ongoing construction works of the District Library in North Lakhimpur town.
During the visit to the district, the minister was accompanied by Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka, Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan, administrative and departmental officers, Lakhimpur district BJP president Phanidhar Baruah and other BJP leaders.
