Minister Piyush Hazarika inspects work of Water Resources Department in Cachar

SILCHAR: Minister for Water Resources & Information and Public Relations department Piyush Hazarika visited several places in Cachar district on the second day of his visit to the Barak Valley here on Thursday. The minister first inspected the repair work of the dam in Badrighat area on the left bank of the Barak river and then visited Betukandi area. A sluice gate is already being constructed in the area and about 700 meters of dam is being raised and reconstructed. During his inspection, the Minister took a look at the work of the sluice gate and about 700 meters of the dam. The minister directed the Deputy Commissioner to work expeditiously to resolve the land acquisition problems encountered in the construction of dams in the area. Minister Hazarika also visited Annapurnaghat in the city and inspected the ongoing erosion prevention work in the area.

Later on the day, minister Hazarika visited Manikpur in Borkhola constituency from Silchar and inspected the flood-affected areas of the Barak river. It needs to mention that a project for reconstruction of dams in Manikpur is already underway but some problems in land acquisition have hampered the progress of the work. During his inspection, the Minister directed the Deputy Commissioner to work actively to resolve the land issue. The minister also directed the Water Resources department to do some urgent works to relieve the area from floods during the coming monsoon season.

WR Minister Pijush Hazarika later visited Mahadevpur on the Indo-Bangladesh border in the district and inspected the sluice gate on the Boleswar river. It is worthy to mention that minister Hazarika visited the area last year and found that six sluice gates constructed under several departments were not functional. The minister had directed the engineers of the Water Resources department to repair the sluice gates. The minister was informed by the departmental engineer that the department has made all six gates on the Indo-Bangladesh border operational in the area. He also directed the Executive Engineer to personally inspect these sluice gates once every week for the next four months and submit a weekly report to the Minister to ensure that they remain operational during the rainy season.

Minister Hazarika was accompanied by MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy, MLA Dipyayan Chakraborty, Deputy Commissioner, Rohan Kumar Jha, officers and engineers of Water Resources Department.
