TAMULPUR: In addition to flooding the river and tributaries, including Barnadi, Baralia, Motanga River, Balti and Pagladia flowing from Bhutan due to incessant rains in the past few days, the rivers and tributaries have been flooding the riverine areas.

In Tamulpur district, many agricultural lands have already been submerged and houses destroyed due to flood. A large area of the entire Tamulpur district as a whole has been devastated by the floods. Heavy damage has been caused in villages like Baltipar, Sahpur, Ghilajhar, Bhalukmari etc. in Nagrijuli area due to erosion of Balti River. The river has threatened many villages.

State Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika arrived in Tamulpur on Thursday afternoon to take stock of the flood and erosion situation. Tamulpur MLA Jolen Daimary, BTC MCLA Bijit Goura Narjary, BTC nominee MCLA Hemant Kumar Rabha, and other officials were present during the visit of the minister.

The minister reached Dolongpar in Tamulpur on Thursday afternoon and visited the areas affected by the erosion of the Motanga River and took stock of the condition of the people affected by the flood. The minister also interacted with the affected people of the village. The minister directed the departmental offiicials present to take immediate action to prevent erosion of the Motanga River. From Dolongpar, Hazarika reached Barkhopa village and visited the pit of Motanga River in Barkhopa and interacted with the people in Barkhopa. The minister directed the departmental officials to take immediate measures to prevent erosion at the erosion site of Motanga River in Barkhopa.

Talking to media persons after visiting the erosion-affected areas, the minister said, "Additional allocation of Rs 121 crore has been made from the Government of Assam to prevent flood and erosion in BTR area." He added that temporary de-erosion work would be carried out due to the current monsoon and the problem would be resolved permanently in the drought season.
