Minor raped and killed; accused nabbed after massive manhunt in Tinsukia

TINSUKIA: After a hot chase by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Tinsukia Police led by Superintendent of Police Abhijit Gurav, the main accused - Anan Tanti - in the sensational rape and murder of a minor in Margherita was nabbed from Deomali in the Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday. The heinous crime took place on the intervening night of Monday-Tuesday at Margherita where a 12-year-old minor was raped, murdered and her body dumped in a septic tank. Tanti absconded after committing the crime. His arrest was confirmed by DSP (Hq) Hiranya Borah.

Tinsukia SP Abhijit Gurav told media persons that on May 1 evening, the mother and daughter went to a Bihu programme nearby. On the way, the child fell asleep and her mother left her in the house of accused Anan Tanti (36) as both the families know each other. The accused’s family gave wrong information to the mother the next day about the whereabouts of the child.

Police later found inconsistencies in the statement of Ganga Tanti, wife of Anan Tanti, and after thorough grilling, she confessed that Anan Tanti committed sexual assault on the child and after killing her, he dumped the body in the septic tank.

Police have apprehended Ganga Tanti. The All Tinsukia District Students’ Union has demanded exemplary punishment for Anan Tanti.
