Guwahati: Ahead of the Assam Assembly elections next year, the state has seen the birth of another political party. The Minority People's Party (MPP) was launched on Monday (December 2).

The goal of forming the new party is to work towards the upliftment of minorities of Assam and giving them equal rights and status and ensure their development as the existing parties have failed so far to address the issues of the people who belong to the minority communities.

Speaking to the media, the convener of the party, Rezazul Karim said that they were forced to launch this party as none of the existing parties of Assam has so far been able to address the issues of the people belonging to the minority community. Karim said that the Minority's Welfare Board too has failed to work for the betterment and upliftment of the minorities. He further stated that the party aimed to provide every minority with equal rights, equal status, and equal development.

"Minority people are suffering from insecurity, thus providing them security and setting them free from that fear is what MPP will do. The name of the party too have been chosen keeping in mind the mission of the party and the people who the party is going to serve," Karim added.

MPP has extended full support to the Assam Accord of 1985 and said that the party's ideology is in sync with the provisions of the Accord as far as the issue of granting citizenship is concerned and the issue of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh is concerned.

The party will also contest Assam Assembly Elections, 2021. However, the party is yet to finalize the number of constituencies that it would be contesting from and the list of candidates too is yet to be ready. Karim said that the MPP would place candidates against The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

Elections to the 126-seat Assam Assembly will be held in April next year.
