SHILLONG: In another untoward development regarding the recent incident on the Assam - Meghalaya border, unknown miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at the Karbi Bhawan located in the capital city of Meghalaya on the night. This is believed to be a repercussion of the incident that took place on the border of the Karbi Anglong district of Assam and the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya earlier during the day.

The incident was confirmed by the Superintendent of Police for the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. He also mentioned that an investigation has been initiated to nab the miscreants involved in the act of arson, but no FIR was registered in this regard. No injury was reported in the attack.

Following the incident, the residents of the Khanduli village of the West Jaintia Hills located on the border of the two states, also decided to shut all trade with the neighbouring state until peace is restored. Similar actions have also been taken on the Karbi Anglong side to prevent any more untoward incidents.

While the local people of Hamren in Assam mentioned that miscreants from the Meghalaya side entered the locality and destroyed a tea plantation. They also set fire to an outpost and injured two locals who had to be shifted to a hospital for proper treatment. The locals from the Meghalaya side alleged that miscreants from the Assam side entered the Khanduli village and pelted stones along with setting fire to two huts.

This incident comes at a time when the two state governments are working actively to solve the problems regarding the interstate border. A discussion has been initiated at the highest levels of police and administration of both states regarding how to defuse the situation. The Superintendents of Police from both districts visited the locations and took stock of the situation while appealing to the people to maintain peace.
