Guwahati: Miscreants involved in trees smuggling in a reserve forest on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh intestate border, allegedly opened fire at a team of Assam forest officials on Tuesday.

However, no was injured in the firing and a joint operation has been launched to nab the miscreants by the two states.

Reportedly, the incident occurred when the forest team attempted to stop the illegal activity at Ronga reserve forest in Assam's Lakhimpur district.

Speaking on the same, the Superintendent of Police, Lakhimpur, BM Rajkhowa said that they got the information about the incident at around 8:30 am.

''The forest officials too opened fire at the smugglers, following which, they fled,'' he added.

Ruling out possibility of any border dispute between the two states, Rajkhowa said that it is yet to ascertain whether the smugglers were from Assam or from its neighboring state.

According to him, presently, the situation is normal at the site and teams of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, including forest and police departments, have launched an operation to nab the culprits.

Notably, illegal settlers in Ronga reserve forest on Saturday had detained a team of Assam forest officials on the border between the two states. Later, with the help of Assam police, the forest officials were rescued.
